As a leading Singaporean company with one of the largest presence in Qatar, Keppel was given the opportunity to present an update of Keppel’s three major Qatari projects to President of the Republic of Singapore, His Excellency SR Nathan and his delegation recently.

During a four-day state visit to the Arab Emirate, the President was accompanied by Dr Lee Boon Yang, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts; Mr Zainul Abidin Rasheed, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA); Singapore Ambassador to Qatar, Wong Kwok Pun; and other government representatives.

From Keppel, Mr Choo Chiau Beng, CEO of Keppel Corporation; Mr Chua Chee Wui, CEO of Keppel Integrated Engineering (KIE); and Mr Yong Chee Min, CEO of Nakilat- Keppel Offshore & Marine, were at hand to brief the President.


MILESTONES IN THE MAKING

The Domestic Solid Waste Management Centre’s civil and structural works are in its final stages with its plant process equipment under installation. Construction for the facility is on-schedule and it is expected to receive waste for treatment by 2010.

The Doha North Sewage Treatment Works’ construction is also proceeding well. Earthworks and excavation works are in advanced stages. Major concreting works are underway and is projected to be completed on schedule and ready to receive wastewater at end-2010. 

Questions that were asked included how Keppel was contributing to the local community beyond the provision of waste management services.

KIE CEO Mr Chua explained that both environmental projects have long-term operations and maintenance components, therefore Keppel will work with government agencies in both countries to add value to the local communities.

He raised the example of deploying Keppel Seghers’ water recycling technology for the construction of Doha North Sewage Treatment Works which relieves the demand for potable water.

Another question was raised on the challenges faced by Keppel when penetrating new markets. Mr Choo and Mr Yong’s replies resonated with what President Nathan said in the Oman leg of the official tour. That is, the importance of upholding the Singapore brand name, and in our case, the Keppel brand.

Other Keppelites based in Doha were also present to mingle with His Excellency and the delegation to provide insights into what life is like working and living in Qatar.

DOMESTIC SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT CENTRE

KIE’s first project in Qatar is to design, build and operate an integrated solid waste management plant.

When completed in 2010, this facility will handle and treat domestic solid waste for the whole of Qatar. KIE will also operate and maintain the facility for 20 years.

With an initial capacity to treat more than 2,300 tons of waste a day, the facility will comprise waste separation and recycling facilities, landfill, composting plant and Waste-to-Energy incineration plant.


DOHA NORTH SEWAGE TREATMENT WORKS

The second project by KIE is to design and build the largest wastewater treatment and water reuse facility in Qatar and the Middle East, and subsequently operate and maintain the facility for 10 years.

Expected to be operational in 2010 with peak capacity to treat wastewater of up to 439,000 m3 per day. The treated water will be recycled for irrigation needs.

The sludge treatment plant, the only one of its kind in Qatar, will receive and treat sludge from wastewater treatment plants from all over Qatar. The treated sludge can be used as an organic fertiliser or as a supplementary green source of energy.
